GAME #2 (aired Monday, June 24, 1996)

It was fantastic being at the champion's podium for game 2. It was also fun being the one everyone knew they had to beat. Backstage beforehand, I kind of reveled in the feeling by acting friendly but very aloof. If anyone talked to me I was fine, but otherwise I sat by myself and tried to look unapproachable. I don't think I was trying to psyche anyone out — I was just on a high and felt like adopting this weird, mysterious persona.

Whoa! I was as shocked as anyone by how far ahead I pulled in this game. These were the scores part of the way into round 2. It certainly helped that I hit all three Daily Doubles, bet increasingly large on each one (and guessed them all right), and had some serious rhythm going on the buzzer.

For this third Daily Double, I had a large enough lead to bet aggressively ($4,000) and still be safe if I answered incorrectly. That was basically my strategy the whole time — to just go for it and hope for the best, which was part of the reason why my score snowballed so fast. In this case, I was lucky I'd made myself a list of many of the presidents and the colleges they attended — and memorized them all.

The scores at the end of Double Jeopardy. I felt kind of bad for my opponents; they were good players, but things were just all going my way in this game. Before Final Jeopardy, Alex mentioned I had a chance to break the all-time one-day record, but I decided to play it safe and bet the maximum that would still guarantee me a win — which, fortunately for me, was still a lot of money.

The Final Jeopardy category was the U.S. Government. I had devoted a bunch of studying to this popular category — the cabinet, branches of government, agencies, etc. — so again I was pretty confident. And again I managed to abate panic when the solution didn't come to me right away. Then I remembered what U.S. government regulatory agency was the first to be established. (If they'd phrased it that way, I probably would have known much faster.)

This was the game that placed me in the Jeopardy list of top one-day winners. Winning that first game felt incredible, but this one was a greater accomplishment.

On to game #3
